What did Do Kyung-wan say?
On October 22, KBS 2TV's variety show New Product Release Pyeonsutorang featured the daily life of broadcaster Do Kyung-wan and his wife, singer Jang Yoon-jeong. According to Sportsseoul, Do said the family was trying to share household costs and that he had agreed to pay the maintenance fees. When he looked at the bills, he complained that his water charge had risen by 58,000 won and that electricity use had grown sharply.
He also criticized air conditioner use and separate showers, asking why family members cool off in separate rooms and bathe apart. He then said, "We're not even allowed to flush the kids' toilets." The show played the moment for laughs, but some viewers did not find it funny.
Why did viewers react negatively?
The main criticism was about contrast. The couple reportedly bought a penthouse in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, in 2024 for 12 billion won in full cash, so some online users said cutting costs in such a way seemed hard to justify. Comments such as "Don't air this" and "Is this really frugal?" appeared in online communities, according to the report.
Do also spoke about the weight of being known as "Jang Yoon-jeong's husband," saying he had turned to stock investing because work was not plentiful. The report notes the remarks may have included exaggeration or comedy typical of variety programs.
For international fans
Jang Yoon-jeong is a well-known trot singer in Korea, and Do Kyung-wan is a longtime TV personality. Their home life is often featured on Korean entertainment programs, and this episode drew attention mainly because of the gap between the couple's wealth and the frugal habits he described on air.
