What is Seungri accused of?
Former BIGBANG member Seungri has been booked on special assault charges over an incident at a Seoul restaurant in August. According to police, a man who filed the complaint says he was assaulted, threatened, and confined by Seungri's party. Seungri's side has rejected those allegations.
What is Seungri's side saying?
In an official statement issued on October 23, Seungri's legal representative, lawyer Yoon Jae-bin of the law firm Surim, said Seungri had been dining with two acquaintances on August 8 when an unfamiliar man asked to join them. After being refused several times, the man sat down in an empty seat without permission, the statement said.
The statement admits that Seungri picked up a soju bottle during a heated exchange. However, it says he never swung it or struck anyone, and that the argument was an emotional clash rather than a physical one. According to the defense, the two sides parted on friendly terms and exchanged text messages, and the complainant only changed attitude days later.
What happens next?
According to police, Seungri will be questioned soon. His lawyer said he will cooperate with the investigation and let investigators establish the facts.
Why is Seungri widely known?
Seungri left BIGBANG in 2019 during the so-called Burning Sun scandal. He was later convicted of habitual gambling and procuring prostitution, served 1 year and 6 months, and was released in February 2023.
For international fans
These are allegations, not a verdict. Under Korean procedure, the police investigation comes first, and any charges would be decided through the legal process. Reports on the case are still developing.
