When is the Supreme Court ruling?

According to legal sources reported by X Sports News, the Supreme Court's Third Division is scheduled to issue its ruling on November 12. The case concerns Ahn Sung-hyun, a former professional golfer and the husband of actress Sung Yu-ri, who was a member of the girl group Fin.K.L.

What is the case about?

Ahn was charged with fraud under the Specified Economic Crimes Act and accepting bribes. Prosecutors allege that in 2021 he received a request from businessman Kang Jong-hyun to get a cryptocurrency listed on the Bithumb exchange. They say he and former Bithumb Holdings CEO Lee Sang-jun accepted 3 billion won in cash, a luxury watch, and a restaurant membership card, and that Lee also obtained 2 billion won from Kang through deception.

How did the courts rule?

In December 2024, the first-instance court sentenced Ahn to 4 years and 6 months in prison and ordered him detained. In February of this year, the Seoul High Court's 13th Criminal Division overturned that ruling and acquitted him, finding that the payments could not be firmly linked to a listing bribe. Lee Sang-jun and Kang Jong-hyun received suspended sentences. Prosecutors then appealed to the Supreme Court on February 6.

Who is Sung Yu-ri?

Sung Yu-ri rose to fame as a member of Fin.K.L. Ahn, who debuted as a professional golfer in 2005, married her in 2017, and they have twin daughters. After the legal issue surfaced she paused broadcast work, returning through a home shopping channel last year and later appearing on variety shows.

For international fans

The Supreme Court decision will determine whether Ahn's acquittal becomes final. Coverage so far comes from Korean media, and the outcome has not yet been announced.
