What it is

A device that inserts fine needles into the skin and releases radiofrequency (RF) energy at the needle tips, heating deeper layers to trigger collagen remodeling. Potenza is one RF microneedling device and can run in monopolar or bipolar mode. Studies cover skin rejuvenation, acne scars, active acne and stretch marks.

Who it’s for

People with acne scars, uneven texture or mild laxity who accept slow, gradual results. A 2021 review found it can be used in darker skin types.

How it’s done

Numbing cream is applied. Needle depth and energy are set, the handpiece is moved across the area, and the skin is cooled and soothed afterwards.

What to get in writing

Recovery

Redness typically lasts about 1–7 days, and small bumps at needle points are common for the first 1–2 days. Grid-like marks can last 1–2 weeks after higher-energy treatment. Improvement can continue for up to 6 months.

Risks and side effects

  • Burns, scarring, fat loss, disfigurement or nerve damage: the US FDA warned in October 2025 about reports of these serious complications
  • Redness, swelling, bruising and grid marks
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, mainly in darker skin
  • Acne flare, cold-sore (herpes) outbreak or superficial infection

Questions people ask

Can RF microneedling be done at home?

No. The FDA describes RF microneedling as a medical procedure, not a cosmetic treatment, and says the devices should not be used at home.

When will I see results?

Collagen remodeling is slow and progressive. A 2021 review noted continued improvement up to 6 months after treatment.

How long is the downtime?

Usually a few days of redness and small bumps. Redness can last up to about a week, and grid marks after high-energy settings can take 1–2 weeks to fade.
