What it is
Surgery that tightens or shortens the muscle that lifts the upper eyelid (levator) so the lid sits higher and more of the eye shows. Medically it treats drooping eyelids (ptosis) that block vision. Aesthetic correction of mild ptosis is also done in East Asia, sometimes during double eyelid surgery.
Who it’s for
Adults whose upper lids droop, from aging, injury or since birth, or who want a more open look. The cause should be checked first, because ptosis can occasionally come from muscle, nerve or other disease.
How it’s done
Under local anesthesia with sedation, the lifting muscle is tightened either through an incision in the eyelid crease or from the inside of the lid, with no skin cut. The incision is then closed.
Why we don’t list a price
- We only show prices we can check in official public statistics, and we couldn’t find one for this treatment.
- Prices vary widely by clinic, area treated, product and amount.
- At the consultation, get the total price, the product and amount (mL or units) and the number of sessions in writing.
Recovery
A follow-up visit is usually set for several days to a week after surgery. Lid height and shape can look uneven at first while swelling settles. After eyelid surgery, most people return to their routine within 1–2 weeks.
Risks and side effects
- Under- or over-correction (eyelid too low or too high)
- Asymmetry between the eyes
- Difficulty closing the eye fully (lagophthalmos) and dry eye
- Damage to the cornea
- Bleeding or infection

Questions people ask
Is ptosis correction the same as double eyelid surgery?
No. Ptosis correction changes how high the lid opens by working on the lifting muscle, while double eyelid surgery creates a crease. The two are sometimes done together.
Is there a non-surgical option?
For some adults with acquired ptosis, a prescription eye drop (oxymetazoline) can open the lid wider. It must be used every day and does not work for every type of ptosis.
Is unevenness right after surgery normal?
Cleveland Clinic notes that lid height and shape may look uneven right after surgery, and that under- or over-correction can occur and often resolves over time.
