Gyeongju, the historic city in North Gyeongsang Province, announced on October 19 that two of its main traditional markets will host festivals this month. Jungang Market will kick off first, followed by Seongdong Market.
When is the rice cake festival?
The 18th Rice Cake and Native Hanwoo Festival takes place at Jungang Market on October 23 and 24. Vendors plan a special rice cake sale, a grilling zone for native Hanwoo (Korean beef), and a food market, along with performances and a prize giveaway.
When is the spoon and chopsticks festival?
The Thousand-Year Spoon and Chopsticks Festival runs at Seongdong Market on October 30 and 31. According to the organizers, the event focuses on families, with spoon basketball and chopstick rally games for children, plus customer participation events and food programs. A night market operates in the evenings, so visitors can stay into the night.
Why it matters for visitors
Gyeongju is known for its ancient royal tombs and heritage sites, and its traditional markets offer a more everyday side of local life. Mayor Joo Nak-yeong said he hopes citizens and tourists will enjoy the food and experiences and take in the autumn atmosphere.
For international fans
For travelers who want to try Korean food in a local setting, these two markets offer a chance to see something beyond the usual tourist spots. Because the events are organized by local vendors, schedules and details may change, so check with the markets before visiting.
